Preparing for an Interview
Whether you are preparing for an interview for a job, a work based learning opportunity or course, good preparation beforehand will help to increase your confidence.
Here are some thoughts and tips to help you
- Be prepared for anything – the interview may be extremely casual and relaxed, or you may be faced by a panel of interviewers, with two to even four or five people.
- You may be asked to make a presentation, take a test of some sort or take part in group activities or role play situations. The employer or training provider will usually let you know in advance if you are required to do this additional work.
- Get yourself organised – make sure you know where the employer, training centre or college is. If you unsure and its local make sure you make a visit beforehand. Check bus/train times or where the car park is.
- First Impressions count! – make sure you wear an outfit that is smart, clean and tidy. Your body language is really important so when you walk into the room smile, make eye contact with the interviewer and shake his/her hand.
- On the day – give yourself enough time to get ready. Aim to arrive 10 minutes early. Remember the letter and any maps telling you where to go. Read through your copy of the application form or your CV to remind yourself of what you wrote. Make sure you have your mobile with you so if anything happens to hold you up you can let them know.
- Coping with the questions – listen to the question carefully. The questions will be designed to give you a chance to show why you are the most suitable candidate. Avoid giving just ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers to the questions. Try to give as much relevant information about yourself as you can. Always be honest - lies and exaggerations always come to light eventually.
- You will usually get an opportunity to ask questions of your own. Make sure you have prepared a couple of questions that demonstrate your interest and help you to find out more about the role you have applied for.
