Making an Application

Making an Application

The UK is currently in a recession. This means that even more than usual, a large number of people are applying for every job vacancy. Only a few will get an interview. Only one will get the job! What can you do to make sure you stand a real chance of being considered?

Here are some guidelines to help you

  • Apply for a job as soon as you can after hearing about it. Don’t leave it until the last minute.
  • Research the employer and the job. Think about how your skills will be useful to the employer.
  • Always write neatly and clearly – it’s a good idea to do a practice copy first.
  • Keep a copy of the application form, letter or on-line application and any other papers from the employer.
  • Make sure your spelling, punctuation and grammar are correct, the spell check program on your computer will NOT spot everything. Get someone else to read it too if it helps.
  • If you name people who will give you a reference make sure you ask their permission first

Remember writing a letter of application, filling in a form (on paper on on-line) or making a telephone call you are trying to convince somebody that you are the most suitable person for the job.
